The Coastland Journey: A Story of Grit, Growth, and Grit Again

From humble beginnings in 2001 to a national footprint across South Africa today, The story of Coastland Sales is one of vision, tenacity, and resilience. What started as a dream shared by Nigel and Fawn Jopson has transformed into a thriving business with five branches, two abrasive converting facilities, and a growing team dedicated to service excellence.

2001: The Beginning

In 2001, when Nigel and Fawn Jopson laid the foundation for Coastland Sales, it wasn’t just about starting a business, it was about meeting a need in the industrial supply space. Their mission wasclear: offer excellent customer service, provide high quality products, and build long-term relationships with both suppliers and clients. It all began without much fanfare, but with plenty of heart. Operating modestly in a garage in Summerstrand but with big dreams, they committed themselves to
the kind of hands-on service that quickly began to win trust.

2002: Home Base in Sidwell

A year later, Coastland Sales officially opened its first premises in Sidwell, Port Elizabeth. This move allowed for a more structured approach to serving local clients and helped establish the brand as a reliable player in the Eastern Cape industrial market. Sidwell became more than just a location, it was the launchpad for future expansion.

2004: Expanding to East London

With a firm foothold in PE, the next logical step was to bring CLS’ quality service to East London. The second branch opened in 2004, further extending the company’s reach in the Eastern Cape. It was proof that the model worked, that customers responded well to honesty, efficiency, and personal service, all of which employees grasp quickly when they are inducted.

2007: Hello, Johannesburg!

By 2007, Coastland Sales was ready for the big leagues. A third branch opened in Johannesburg, South Africa’s bustling commercial hub. Breaking into Jozicame with its challenges, but also with great opportunities. The branch was a leap of faith that paid off, proving that CLS’ customer-focused approach could stand its ground anywhere in the country.

2009: Growing into KwaZulu-Natal

Two years later, the KZN branch was born. This fourth addition to Team CLS served as another milestone and opened the door to the booming coastal industries. By then, the business had grown into a seasoned competitor with a national presence, but the same warm, accessible spirit that defined it in year one was still intact.

2013: Taking Innovation into Our Own Hands

2013 marked a major turning point: the launch of CLS’ first abrasive converting facility in PE. No longer fully dependent on external suppliers, the company could now manufacture custom abrasives in-house. This increased both agility and product offering, allowing Coastland Sales to respond to customer needs faster and with greater flexibility.

2021: Scaling Up

In 2021, CLS doubled down. A bulk warehouse was opened in PE to handle increasing demand, alongside a second abrasive converting facility. These moves weren’t just about storage and supply, they were about efficiency, control, and the ability to deliver on time, every time. Coastland Sales was no longer just a distributor, it had become a key manufacturer and logistics player.

2024: Cape Town Joins the Family

And in 2024, the latest chapter was written. A fifth branch opened in Cape Town, completing CLS’ presence in all major South African regions. With a strong team, loyal customer base, and an ever-growing product range, Coastland Sales is more committed than ever to serving industry across the country.
